On this evening, the Kammerorchester Basel (Chamber Orchestra) will perform Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3, “Eroica” and his Concerto for Violin and Orchestra in D major. You know the story—Beethoven dedicated his third symphony, the “Eroica,” to Napoleon. But when Napoleon crowned himself emperor, Beethoven became so enraged that he tore up the dedication on the title page. But it is strange: Beethoven often wrote Napoleon's name above the music, then erased it again, wrote it down again. It could mean that he no longer wanted to externally document the work's relationship to Napoleon, but internally firmly believed that this inner relationship was part of the work.
Sleeping Beauty—that's the name of Isabelle Faust's Stradivarius, because it spent 150 years gathering dust in an attic before being kissed awake again. Now, it brings to life Beethoven's prototype of the violin concerto for the 19th and 20th centuries with such a silvery sound that Beethoven would have been delighted with it—as will be, undoubtedly, the audience.
Tickets are CHF 30-90 for adults and half price for students.
