What holds us together when the world is falling apart? This concert focuses on breath as a central connecting element, the origin of sound, and the basis of all shared music-making. Mendelssohn's "Grant Us Peace, Graciously," sung by the choirs of the Muttenz, Liestal, and Leonhard high schools accompanied by I Tempi, opens the evening with a poignant musical plea for peace. Frank Ticheli's "Earth Song" takes up this theme with great expressiveness in a contemporary musical language. With Sharon Kam, you can experience one of the most distinguished clarinetists of our time in Mozart's Clarinet Concerto. She becomes, in this work, an "ambassador of breath." Hardly any other work combines such lyrical intimacy with the lightness and joy so typical of Mozart. The crowning finale is Beethoven's 8th Symphony. The cheerful, life-affirming character of this work is a musical plea for joie de vivre and peaceful coexistence.
