Klanglichter — Death and the Maiden

Obere Fabrik Sissach
Saturday, 22 November
19:30

For the last concert of the Klanglichter concerts in 2025, Paola De Piante has succeeded in bringing one of the most important string quartets to Sissach—the musicians of the sought-after Gringolts Quartet live in Zürich and have at the Salzburg Festival, in the Wigmore Hall, and the Elbphilharmonie, among others. The evening begins with one of Mozart's most artistic string quartets. He dedicated it, along with five other quartets, to his "dear friend" Haydn, calling the quartets the fruit of long, arduous labor and "his children," which he was releasing into the world. The deeply impressed dedicatee expressed his gratitude with a famous quote: he called Mozart the greatest composer "that I know personally and by name; he has taste and, moreover, the greatest knowledge of composition." Hugo Wolf's "Italian Serenade" follows as a cheerful interlude. Wolf, too, demonstrated exceptional artistry in this short, light-hearted, and delicate gem of quartet literature, along with a great deal of humor and enthusiasm for Italian bel canto.
The name "Death and the Maiden" for Franz Schubert's String Quartet in D minor comes from the song of the same name, which he incorporates into the variations of the second movement. The image of the merciless skeleton bending over the sleeping maiden runs through the work from the opening dramatic chords to the ghostly and at times bizarre finale, repeatedly interrupted by the idyllic dream worlds of the lyrical themes. Schubert had always been preoccupied with the themes of death and the grave, but it is unmistakable that the then-27-year-old composer was musically grappling with the first signs of his own terminal illness.
Tickets are CHF 38 for adults and CHF 23 for youths and students.
