The La Cetra ensemble has been dedicating itself to the music of Claudio Monteverdi for years, and their Grammy-nominated Monteverdi CD with Magdalena Kožená has received international attention. Their Christmas highlight of 2023 will be the first performance of Monteverdi's famous “Marian Vespers.” This fantastic work is a multi-part composition published by Monteverdi himself. Researchers are not sure, however, whether the heterogeneous group of responses, psalms, motets, vocal concertos, hymns, and Magnificats was intended by the composer as a new, unified piece or as a loose collection of sacred songs. Some even suspect that the composer simply wanted to show different sides of his abilities when applying for a job in Rome. La Cetra performs this wonderful music with a large cast—similar to how Venetian sources describe the performances in San Marco—with 24 singers from the vocal ensemble, accompanied by 17 instrumentalists.
