La Cetra — Liebeslieder (Love Songs)

Stadtcasino Basel
Thursday, 29 September
19:30-21:30

The La Cetra Vokalensemble’s “a cappella” cycle has become firmly established in Basel in a very short time. At the beginning of the 2022/23 season, the choir, still eager to experiment, ventures onto the stage with an innovation: For once, the core of the program in this concert is not Renaissance or Baroque music, but romantic, you could almost say “salon music” by Johannes Brahms! In 1868, Brahms conceived his "Love Song Waltz" for four solo voices and piano four hands, so to speak for home use. Under pressure from his publisher Simrock, a version without vocals was later created. A performance with a choir, which Brahms initially disliked, finally received the approval of the strict creator. The classical Hans Huber Saal of the Stadtcasino Basel, which is based on plans from the late 19th century, perfectly matches the work’s bourgeoise-happy character.
Why are two pianists appearing in an "a capella" program? For this cycle, the choir will continue to sing without the associated “Kapelle,” the La Cetra Barockorchester Basel. La Cetra's ideological stance on a particular approach to music will not be shaken, which means that the two guests, Edoardo Torbianelli and Ludovic van Hellemont, will play period instruments.
Tickets are CHF 40-70 for adults, half price for students, and CHF 5 for kids under age 14.
