It has been a few years since the last sing-along performance of Händel’s “Messiah” in Basel. This Anglo-Saxon tradition has been popular since the 19th century, particularly around Christmas (this concert was postponed from December 2021), and derives from the practice of adding amateur choirs to the professional choirs and orchestras for the oratorio’s performances, blurring the lines between performers and audiences.
The La Cetra Barockorchester & Vokalensemble have been performing the “Sing-along Messiah” since 2012, and this year they are also including two Basel schools in the presentation; soloists will be soprano Anett Fritsch, countertenor William Shelton, tenor Jakob Pilgrim, and bass José Antonio López. There are still a few places available for fellow singers in the La Cetra sing-along choir and the whole performance is sung in English. If you would like to sing and perform the Messiah in the wonderful Stadtcasino Basel with one of the best baroque ensembles, first-class soloists, and under the direction of Andrea Marcon, then register at or 061-205-3355.The two optional rehearsals with the fellow singers will take place on Friday, June 17, 18:30-21:30 and on Thursday, June 23, 18:30-21:30. Dress rehearsal (mandatory) will take place on the day of the concert, June 26, at 11:00.
Tickets are CHF 30–90 for adults, half-price for students, and CHF 5 for kids under age 14.
