To conclude their anniversary season, La Cetra is swapping conductors—and they are very much looking forward to working with Ivor Bolton! He will conduct the participatory performance of Händel's "Messiah" at the Stadtcasino, which has become a tradition for La Cetra. Written in record time, the work actually represented Händel's desperate attempt to find a new musical-dramatic genre after the dwindling success of opera. Today, "Messiah" is his best-known work.
This anniversary season will once again feature singers who have long been associated with La Cetra, most notably countertenor Carlos Mena, also a professor of singing at the Schola Cantorum. Also performing are the exceptional young talents José Coca Loza; Jacob Lawrence, known from the La Cetra Vocal Ensemble; and Jone Martinez, the Spanish soprano who has already performed with La Cetra during the coronavirus pandemic. For the oratorio's major choral numbers, the La Cetra Vocal Ensemble will be joined by a large, intergenerational choir of amateur singers from the entire region. As with the last "Sing-Along Messiah," they are also pleased to welcome various children's choirs from Basel schools on stage. By involving a broad public, they hope to break down the barrier between performers and listeners. There is a special magic in experiencing music together—and especially the music of the Baroque period.
Tickets are CHF 30-90.
