La Cetra — Vespro di Natale

Martinskirche
Monday, 02 December
19:30

La Cetra starts the Advent season at the beginning of December in Basel’s Martinskirche with a real classic from their repertoire. The “Christmas Vespers” is a program of sacred pieces from the early Venetian Baroque, conceived by Andrea Marcon himself and performed numerous times by La Cetra and released on CD by Deutsche Grammophon in 2022. The compilation is characterized by compositions by Claudio Monteverdi—for example the opening responsory "Domine ad adiuvandum" from the “Marian Vespers,” the psalm settings from the collection "Selva morale e spirituale," or the impressive eight-part “Magnificat” from the same source. But Monteverdi's contemporaries are also represented, such as organ intonations by Giovanni Gabrieli, who worked at St. Mark's Basilica until his death in 1612 and was Monteverdi's most important predecessor there. Motets and sonatas by Alessandro Grandi and Francesco Usper round off the Christmas program. The “Vespro di Natale” transports listeners to the heyday of Venetian church music in the early 17th century and gives them an idea of what the services in St. Mark's Basilica under the direction of Monteverdi might have sounded like.
Tickets are CHF 20-80.
