LIEDBasel — Rare Earth

Don Bosco Basel
Sunday, 26 May
17:00

The festival LIEDBasel (SongBasel), which will run this year from May 22-26, is a contemporary and interdisciplinary examination of the art form of song. It's not just about the intimacy of singing and piano—and not just about the past, because the interpreters are people who live in the present. The song is about life in a nutshell. It reflects everyday life in different centuries and different facets. It tells and sings about individuals trying to assert themselves in society. Unlike an aria, the song is the entire story, told in just a few minutes. That’s what makes the song so extraordinary and distinctive. The festival consists of six formats, including discussions, master classes, recitals, and more . These different starting points should inspire not only the performers, but also the audience. The individual events offer opportunities for exchange and reflection. Consult the website to peruse the whole program at https://liedbasel.ch/programm/.
The final concert of the festival, entitled “Rare Earth,” features soprano Sophia Burgos and pianist Daniel Arkadij Gerzenberg. On the program will be Leo Dick’s “Rare Earth” the premiere of this work commissioned by LIEDBasel; George Crumb’s “Apparition;” improvisations on two poems by Daniel Arkadij Gerzenberg; as well as songs by Wolf, de Falla, Schubert, Schumann, Poulenc, and Guastavino.
Tickets are on a pay-what-you-can basis, CHF 20, CHF 40, or CHF 60. Festival passes for 6 events are CHF 150.
