“Magic Havana” — Ana Carla Maza “Caribe” Quartet / Yilian Cañizares

Volkshaus Basel
Monday, 13 May
19:30

Ana Carla Maza started playing the cello at age 8, and age 10 she was on stage in Havanna for the first time. At age 13, she participated in an album of the project “Carlos Maza en Familia” and at age 14, she played on the album “Quererte.” In 2016, she released “Solo Acoustic Concert,” which was inspired by the musical traditions of her childhood, from Brazilian bossa nova to Cuban habanera; the album “La Flor” followed in 2020. The album “Bahia,” which was released in 2022, is the next step on this musical journey. It opens with “Habana,” where she was born into a musical family 26 years ago. The second title “Bahia” is an ode to the quarter in Havanna where she spent her childhood and formed her memories. The Ana Carla Maza Quartet is coming to Basel for the first time.
Yilian Cañizares is a unique artist. As part of the diaspora of talented Cuban artists who share their music, their social conscience, and their spiritual sensibility with the world, she combines an Afro-Cuban style, classical virtuosity, and jazz sensibility with her experiences from Havanna. For several years, Cañizares toured with Cuban jazz legends Chucho Valdés and Omar Sosa as a violinist, singer, and composer. In 2021, she received the Swiss Music Prize and was invited by the United Nations as the “Voice of the Ocean” to produce a new composition for the World Oceans Day. To celebrate her 10th anniversary on stage, she surprised her audiences with a new project that was recently recorded in Brazil, “Habana-Bahia.” She spent several weeks in the working-class neighborhood of Candeal in Salvador de Bahia until she decided to leave a trace in the form of this album. Salvador de Bahia, birthplace of Afro-Brazilian culture, represents the uniqueness of Brazil.
Tickets are CHF 40.20-90.90.
