Since 1995, the pianist Robert Kolinsky together with his team endeavors to bring renowned artists to Basel for an annual classical music festival to popularize the works of Czech composer Bohuslav Martinů. The festival, which is regarded by the media as “the smallest but finest of its kind,” this year will run from November 10-24 and will include four concerts and one film.
On the opening night of the Martinů Festival, star oboist Albrecht Mayer will be exploring the works of Bohuslav Martinů in depth for the first time—a scandal, really, so late in the day, as the Czech composer wrote perhaps the most famous oboe concerto of the 20th century! Now it will soon be on the repertoire list of the renowned principal oboist of the Berliner Philharmoniker. Mayer's first steps in this direction will initially be through Martinů's oboe quartets. Together with his Swiss musician friends, he will present a chamber music program with virtuoso, captivating major works from the oboe literature of Martinů’s French contemporary and “chansonnier” Francis Poulenc. In addition, Mayer will present another work by Miloslav Kabeláč, whom the audience celebrated almost frenetically in 2022, in order to help this composer move out of the great shadow of his Czech compatriot Martinů and to draw attention to the new Kabeláč CD series.
Tickets are CHF 35.
