Since 2007, with a lot of volunteer commitment and passion, Piano di Primo has been organizing jazz concerts that enable artists of national and international importance to introduce the audience to tried and tested musical specialties and novel ideas. They are organizing a few events per year in the Fachwerk building (Allschwil Local History Museum) in the middle of the idyllic village center of Allschwil, where you can spoil yourself with selected wines, a cold beer, or non-alcoholic refreshments from the bar.
With “Call on the Old Wise,” pianist Nitai Hershkovits presents his remarkable solo debut. In this largely improvised program, Hershkovits draws on a broad spectrum of influences, ranging from his extensive work in jazz contexts and experimental contemporary explorations to classical music. His sensitive handling of these diverse idioms results in a unique range of timbres, demonstrating that he has long since developed a completely independent voice as an improviser and form-creator. With a gentle touch; light-footed, playful movements across the keys; and dreamy harmonies, Hershkovits’ improvisations unfold like compositions created in real time. “Call on the Old Wise” is a testament to his unique inventiveness and is an indispensable addition to the distinguished series of solo piano recordings on ECM. It was awarded the German Record Critics' Annual Prize in 2024.
