No Jazz?! — Fjarill / David Helbock’s Random/Control

Atlantis Basel
Thursday, 22 May
20:00-22:00

What power does the spoken word develop? What magic arises when we move between languages and time? And what thoughts and feelings come when text and music come together? Fjarill answers all of these questions on her ninth album "Poësi" and in her musical and literary program with actor Andreas Grötzinger. "Poësi" combines deeply sad and dreamily beautiful poetry by Nelly Sachs and Pär Lagerkvist with a unique, multi-layered world of sound between folk, pop, jazz, and classical. The Swedish singer and pianist Aino Löwenmark, together with the South African violinist Hanmari Spiegel, moves so artfully between then and now that an absolutely timeless magic emerges.
Random/Control was David Helbock's most important project for many years. The three musicians from Vorarlberg celebrated their 15th anniversary last year and gave hundreds of concerts together all over the world. After the release of three albums—"Random/Control" (2010), "Think of Two" (2014), and "Tour d'Horizon" (2018)—the band is ready for a new program and new adventures. The new album that will be released in early 2025; "Think of Two," which is dedicated to the two music legends Thelonious Monk and Hermeto Pascoal, impressed Pascoal himself so much that he contributed to it and recorded it especially for Random/Control in Brazil. The trio’s trademark is their use of many instruments—only three musicians, but well over 20 instruments. Andreas Broger plays the clarinet, bass clarinet, various saxophones, and flutes, and now even sings occasionally. Johannes Bär masters almost all brass instruments—sousaphone, tuba, trombone, trumpet, alphorn, but also didgeridoo, beatbox and drums—and sometimes even all at the same time. Inspired by this variety of sound possibilities, David Helbock, who focuses on the piano and some percussion, has composed many new pieces, setting poems by William Blake, Emily Dickinson, and others to music. Now the trio has invited Fola Dada to sing exactly these poems. Dada is an extremely versatile artist and can be described as a pioneer when it comes to combining different genres in singing. The trained jazz singer started with tap dancing in the style of Fred Astaire and didn't stop even with vocal coaching for Dieter Bohlen's DSDS candidates. She has become an integral part of the German jazz and soul scene and was awarded the German Jazz Prize in the singing category in 2022. Helbock's passionate, wild trio meets one of the most exciting singers in Germany!
Tickets are CHF 36.10-61.60.
