Nubya stands for pure musical passion. In her lyrics, the Basel artist gives insight into her emotional world. As a singer, she is as free and lively on stage as the audience could only wish for. Her work is shaped by her nature as a cosmopolitan who has never lost touch with her roots—her family. Born in Basel, the daughter of a Swiss mother and a Nigerian father, she spent parts of her childhood and youth in Nigeria and New York. Nubya regularly visits Nigeria and her family there. She is committed to the population—including officially as a Red Cross ambassador.
Nubya's sound can't really be forced into a corset anywhere. It’s unmistakably influenced by pop and soul, but the diversity of her energetic personality is also reflected in typically African influences and a certain roughness in the arrangements that is all too often missing in modern pop but which immediately allows the famous spark to spread to the audience. Especially when Nubya presents her older songs in a new guise.
Nubya attended a jazz school, sang in a gospel choir, and took piano lessons for 9 years as a child. While she learned to sing and play instruments in Switzerland, she experienced what it means to live music in New York. Back in Switzerland, Nubya became so successful with her bands that she focused entirely on music—and in 1999 she enchanted with an appearance in the opening act for the unrivaled Whitney Houston in Zürich's Hallenstadion. Her international engagements are as numerous as they are impressive and this November, she will perform to a lucky audience at the Atlantis in her hometown Basel.
Tickets are CHF 45 in advance and CHF 50 at the door.
