NY Black Music — Pheeroan akLaff Quartet

Atlantis Basel
Wednesday, 21 May
20:30

Pheeroan akLaff was born Paul Maddox in 1955 in Detroit, Michigan, and is one of the most important jazz drummers in New York's Black music scene. In the offbeat anniversary year, it is important to invite the famous representatives of New York's new jazz scene again. AkLaff was a frequent guest in Basel in the 80s. He began in rhythm and blues bands and theater groups at Eastern Michigan University. His first important engagement was with Jay Hoggard in 1975. Through regular collaboration with Wadada Leo Smith he met Oliver Lake, in whose group Jump Up he played for a long time. He also played with Anthony Davis and James Newton, in Henry Threadgill's sextet, with Amina Claudine Myers, Michael Gregory Jackson, and in the group New Air. Over the next few years, he was primarily heard as an accompanist for Sonny Sharrock, Geri Allen, and Yosuke Yamashita. It was not until 1990 that another album followed.
This concert was made possible thanks to the personal commitment of Madeleine Kamber.
Tickets are CHF 32.10-71.80.
