Giacomo Puccini's operas generally captivate with heartbreaking love stories, gigantic orchestral apparatus, and pompous intentions. The Berlin Compagnia Nuova shows in its second guest performance in Lörrach that an opera like “Tosca” also works in a very intimate setting. The ensemble adapts the material, which originally took place in Rome in 1800, to today's circumstances and transforms the timeless crime thriller about betrayal, power, and abuse into a tragic satire of the current times.
By drastically reducing the number of singers to just five (!), some of whom even perform several roles, Compagnia Nuova manages to focus on the characters' personal dramas. The five singers carry the opera, which has been transformed into a chamber play and which would otherwise be carried by five hundred people—an immense achievement. And although the “Tosca” now appears “reduced,” it still remains “indestructibly attractive” (The Bell).
Tickets are €33-56 for adults and € 26.40-44.80 for students.
