Where there is power, there is resistance—in Claudio Monteverdi's opera "L'incoronazione di Poppea" (The coronation of Poppea), these two forces warp the brains and hearts of empresses, soldiers, and court ladies. The philosopher Seneca strives in vain to calm the yearnings and selfishness of all involved. The scandalous rise of Poppea to Roman empress at Nero's side is at the center of Monteverdi's last opera. Kerstin Avemo makes her debut as Poppea. Anne Sofie von Otter continues her collaboration with director Christoph Marthaler at Theater Basel. Laurence Cummings conducts the La Cetra Barockorchester.
This opera musicale in three acts will be performed in Italian with German and English surtitles.
Tickets are CHF 30-145 for adults and CHF 20 for students.
