Encouraged by the prophecies of the three witches and the ambition of his lady, Macbeth kills the king and seizes power. A spiral of cruel murders is set in motion. Far from the power they long for, the couple are gripped by the guilt that pervades their days and nights. Verdi's music depicts the dramatic intensity to the point of madness with no respite. In director Herbert Fritsch's fantastical universe, the bloodlust is intensified to the point of grotesqueness. Iain MacNeil makes his debut at Theater Basel in the title role, and audience favourite Heather Engebretson returns as Lady Macbeth. This psychological drama between power and madness will be performed in Italian with German and English surtitles.
Tickets are CHF 30-145 for adults and CHF 20 for youths and students.
