Piano Solo Summit — Grégory Privat & Jason Moran

Martinskirche
Monday, 08 April
20:00-22:00

The musical tradition of his native Martinique nourishes large branches in the musical family tree of the pianist Grégory Privat (*1984). His earliest musical influence was his father, a pianist. After 10 years of classical training, Privat began composing and improvising—jazz became his musical home. The next stop was the hard school of sessions and gigs in the jazz clubs of Toulouse, where Privat had moved to study engineering. He subsequently moved to Paris to make a name for himself in the city's lively, open-minded jazz scene. Soon he was playing with the best-known colleagues from Guadeloupe, such as saxophonist Jacques Schwarz-Bart; trumpeter Franck Nicolas, and the Gwoka master, percussionist / drummer Sonny Troupé, as well as with greats from the European scene such as Stéphane Belmondo, Remi Vignolo, and Guillaume Perret.
Jason Moran is one of the most exciting, eager to experiment, stylistically open, and inspiring pianists of contemporary jazz. The pianist, who hails from Texas but lives in New York, is one of the favorite guests of the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg. He is celebrated not only for his unique art on the piano but increasingly also as a composer, including for ballet and dance theater. But the core business of this grand master of improvisation is playing piano by himself, letting loose his ideas and his immense skill. Moran sets up the central traditions of jazz against each other—from blues to Harlem stride, swing, bop, and free. And because he treasures not only the past of Black Culture but also its present, he also reflects hip hop in his inimitable way.
Tickets are CHF 29.00-89.90.
