Rabih Abou-Khalil Group & Elina Duni

Volkshaus Basel
Friday, 12 May
20:00

Rabih Abou-Khalil is a wanderer between cultures. The oud virtuoso and composer, who was born in Lebanon and now lives in France after a long stay in Germany, combines traditional Arabic music, European classical music, and American jazz into an intelligent mélange, far removed from any world music clichés. With an alert mind, a high level of playing and compositional competence, and a good dose of humor, he succeeds in merging the musical worlds in an extraordinary way. His complex compositions combine Arabic meters and scales as well as pronounced improvisations. The result is incredibly fresh music—fascinatingly complex, intoxicatingly virtuosic, and highly sensual. Abou-Khalil has won many awards; for example, he received five German Jazz Awards in 1999 alone. He comes with his quartet and has invited Elina Duni as a special guest. The fantastic singer with Albanian roots combines the sounds of Albania with timeless jazz ballads in her music.
Tickets are CHF 61.60-76.90.
