Rendez-Vous aux Jardins (Meeting in the Gardens)

The French Ministry of Culture and Communication works throughout the year to promote, protect, conserve, maintain, restore, and create gardens, as well as train gardeners about the art of gardening. For the 19th year, they will be presenting “Rendez-vous aux jardins,” a weekend organized in collaboration with the Parks and Gardens Committee, the Vieilles Maisons Françaises, the Historic House, the Centre des Monuments Nationaux, and numerous local authorities. The idea behind this weekend is to discover, or rediscover, France’s rich green heritage and to learn about the art of the garden through guided tours, lectures, debates, demonstrations, concerts, games, workshops, shows, and exhibitions. This year’s theme “Les musiques du jardins" (The music of the gardens) was largely inspired by acoustic walks, sound installations, and concerts. Listen to the murmur of the wind, the lapping of the water, and the songs of the birds and let yourself be carried away in this sound atmosphere conducive to meditation and daydreaming.
On this weekend, over 2,300 gardens in France will be open for visiting and will host over 3,500 events. You can visit their website to view an interactive map with the locations of the gardens, several dozen of which are in neighboring Alsace. So if you are a fan of gardening and/or historical and contemporary gardens, why not take a trip across the French border on this weekend and visit as many as you can; admission as well as information sharing is free.
