ReRenaissance Basel — Amor Fortuna

Historisches Museum Basel - Barfüsserkirche
Saturday, 28 June
18:15

Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina was probably born 500 years ago in 1525 and was considered one of the most important composers of sacred music of his time after his death. Although he is primarily remembered today as an author of sacred music due to his work as a singer and chapel master in Rome, he also published madrigals for four and five voices, which became very famous (such as “Io son ferito” and “Vestiva i colli”). The expressive and virtuoso styles of singing and playing were represented (or inspired) by musicians such as Giovanni Battista Bovicelli, Francesco Rognoni, Alfonso Ferrabosco, Giovanni Bassano and Girolamo dalla Casa. ReRenaissance celebrates Palestrina’s 500th birthday with a mixed vocal-instrumental ensemble that presents this lesser-known side of the composer with virtuosity and expressiveness. From the purely vocal to the purely instrumental, including many different combinations of these two media, this jubilee concert aims to give a glimpse of the sound landscape in which the madrigal genre was practiced at the end of the 16th century.
ReRenaissance is a series of concerts that focuses on the music and culture of the Renaissance. These concerts celebrating "a renaissance of the renaissance" are performed by professional musicians from Basel.
The concert is free, but there will be a collection.
