ReRenaissance Basel — Iron Hand

Stadtkirche Liestal
Saturday, 28 March
18:15

Oswald von Wolkenstein (c. 1376–1445) was a politician, knight, world traveler, and at the same time poet, musician, and legendary figure. His songs recount adventures on journeys throughout Europe, to the Council of Basel (where his second manuscript of songs was also created), a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, and his shipwreck in the Black Sea. They also reveal his deep connection to his homeland of South Tyrol—for example, when he sings of the cold winters in his castle or vividly describes the awakening of spring in Val Gardena. His multifaceted personality ultimately led to his becoming a local legend. Legend has it that a spell was placed on his hand, causing him to break any musical instrument he touched. Hence, he was called "Man de fyèr," or Iron Hand. In this concert, these two facets of the "last minnesinger" are brought together and interwoven with his legend.
ReRenaissance is a globally unique concert series that focuses on music and Renaissance culture. "A Renaissance of the Renaissance," brought to life by professional musicians from Basel.
The concert is free, but there will be a collection.
