ReRenaissance Basel — Magnum Opus Musicum 1604
The sacred works of Orlandus Lassus (1532-1594) were celebrated in their day, and 10 years after the composer's death, his sons Ferdinand and Rudolph published his 516 motets in a commemorative publication entitled “Magnum Opus Musicum.” Lassus was known as a master of the musical representation of texts, and this ability was celebrated in his motets and psalms more than in any other genre. His contemporary biographer Samuel Quickelberg wrote that Lassus expressed “the power of individual feelings” and managed to present his themes “almost vividly before the eyes” of the listener. This program revives the lush sounds of the Munich court orchestra in Lassus' time, performed by Catherine Motuz, Carlos Federico Sepúlveda, Bork-Frithjof Smith, and the Schola Cantorum Bailiensis.
ReRenaissance is a series of concerts that focuses on the music and culture of the Renaissance. These concerts celebrating "a renaissance of the renaissance" are performed by professional musicians from Basel.
The concert is free, but there will be a collection.
