Rio 1955 — Contrasts in Focus
The exhibition “Rio 1955 — Contrasts in Focus” shows works by the Austrian painter Franz Josef Widmar from the Foundation Brasilea’s collection. Widmar, who captured the atmosphere and life in Rio de Janeiro in the 1950s with a unique perspective, brought his European artistic influence with him and merged it with the vibrant themes and colors of Brazil.
The contrasts reflect the dynamics of the time: from the working fishermen on the coast to the busy streets and markets of the growing metropolis. Widmar captures the pulsating energy and cultural diversity of Rio in his paintings by depicting scenes of everyday life as well as social encounters. His works combine realistic and impressionistic elements that bring the spirit of this era to life through lively brushstrokes and intensive use of color.
