Rosario Giuliani & Giovanni Mirabassi Duo; Max Ionata Trio

Dorfkirche Riehen
Tuesday, 19 May
20:00

On this evening, Jazz Festival Basel will be presenting a double concert entitled “Italian Sax Summit.”
Rosario Giuliani is considered one of Italy's freshest and most expressive saxophonists. He began his musical career in 1987 after completing his studies at the Licinio Refice Conservatory in Frosinone. In 1989, he was a member of the festival band organized by Berklee College of Music. He has also worked with Ennio Morricone, Luis Bacalov, Armando Trovajoli, and Riz Ortolani. In 2000, he recorded his debut album, “Luggage.” In 2005, he contributed to the album “Land of the Sun” by Charlie Haden and Gonzalo Rubalcaba. Giuliani has also worked with numerous greats in Italy and elsewhere. In Switzerland, he will be heard for the first time with pianist Giovanni Mirabassi, who hails from Umbria and has lived in Paris for many years.
Saxophonist Max Ionata, also from Italy, is appearing at Offbeat for the first time. He is not only one of Italy's most sought-after tenor saxophonists, but has also achieved international renown. In Japan, for example, he is a frequent and welcome guest. This is not least thanks to his melodious and tasteful saxophone playing and his full, warm sound. His award-winning fellow musicians are in no way inferior to him: they share his preference for a steady groove, an unwavering swing, strong melodies, and finely crafted harmonies—entirely in the tradition of the swing, bebop, and hard bop eras.
Tickets are CHF 33.10-77.90.
