Sinfonieorchester Basel — Mahler 9
On this evening, the Sinfonieorchester Basel under the direction of conductor Sir Mark Elder, will be performing Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 9.
It is the curse of the 9th symphony: neither Beethoven, Bruckner, Dvořák, nor Spohr wrote more than nine symphonies. It is therefore understandable that Gustav Mahler developed an almost panic-stricken fear of this number and renamed the ninth symphony he was working on, “The Song of the Earth.” When he was then working on what would be his Symphony No. 9, he justified himself to his wife Alma: "It's actually the tenth, because ‘The Song of the Earth’ is my ninth." As it turned out, the Symphony No. 9 remained Mahler's last completed work, in which the main motifs of death, farewell, and transience run through all four movements.
Tickets are CHF 35-110 for adults and half-price for students and kids up to age 16.
