Sinfonieorchester Basel — Sinfonische Reise (Symphonic Journey)

Many composers had a special relationship with the railway: Antonín Dvořák spent hours at Prague station chatting to train drivers, Sergei Rachmaninoff used it to escape, and Richard Strauss was even involved in a train accident. The train journey was best captured musically by Arthur Honegger, whose symphonic work “Pacific 231” was an international success. The huffing and puffing of the steam engine is so realistic that the onomatopoeia almost becomes a visual image.
Other works on the program of this concert with the Sinfonieorchester Basel under the direction of Aziz Shokhakimov and with pianist Behzod Abduraimov include Ludwig van Beethoven’s Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 1 in C major, op. 15; Alexander Mosolov’s “The Iron Foundry,” op. 19; and Rachmaninoff’s “Symphonic Dances,” op. 45.
Tickets are CHF 35-110 for adults and half-price for youths and students.
