As part of their special program for the Art Basel Week, Fondation Beyeler is inviting interested art lovers to a book launch, "Snowman," that records the story of the eponymous sculpture by Fischli/Weiss.
Originally conceived in 1990 for the Römerbrücke combined heat and power plant in Saarbrücken, Germany, "Snowman" by Fischli/Weiss looks back on a 30-year history that is also entwined with the development of electricity generation. Realized in its present form in 2016, Snowman has stood in the Fondation Beyeler gardens since 2020 as the museum’s first solar-powered work of sculpture. The story of "Snowman" has now been recorded in a new artist’s book by Peter Fischli. As part of the book presentation, Fischli talks to Cara Manes, Associate Curator for Painting and Sculpture at the Museum of Modern Art. The event will be held in English.
Swiss artists Peter Fischli (* 1952) and David Weiss (1946-2012) are among the most important artists of the 20th century; their collaboration lasted more than three decades. Their works, executed in a wide range of media, display a pronounced sense of humor, a love of poetry, and a fascination with the everyday. In 2016, Fischli/Weiss were represented at the Fondation Beyeler in the exhibition “Alexander Calder & Fischli/Weiss.”
Tickets are CHF 25 and include museum admission prior to the event.
