Walking, running, staggering, stumbling, dragging oneself—what sounds like simple locomotion becomes the central subject of investigation in "Sphynx." In her award-winning choreography, Swiss choreographer Rafaële Giovanola poses the fundamental question of what defines us as a species. Together with 14 dancers from tanzmainz, she explores the seemingly endless and fascinating universe of the human musculoskeletal system. What sounds simple has a captivating pull. "Sphynx" is not just a study of movement, but a thoughtful exploration of human locomotion—precisely and extremely consistently executed.
Imagination plays a central role: Great choreographic inventiveness meets the individual nuances of each body on stage. "Sphynx" was awarded the German theater prize Der Faust in 2022. The choreographer behind this prestigious award is a familiar face at Steps: Rafaële Giovanola was already part of the festival in 2022 with her own company, CocoonDance.
