Strawberry Festival in the Black Forest
The Black Forest of Germany is an area that is rich in tradition, with traditional dress, cuisine, beer, wine, music, culture, and festivals of all kinds. It is also a very fertile land with an abundance of seasonal fruits and vegetables that are celebrated locally in the most interesting ways. When a harvest is plentiful, there will by definition be festivals to celebrate these wonderful bounties, from wild garlic (Bärlauch) in March and asparagus in April to flowers and grapes in the fall.
This weekend in downtown Oberkirch is all about the strawberry—the “queen of fruits.” The strawberry festival is held here every year because Oberkirch has the reputation of being the leading producer and market for strawberries, with an annual harvest of about 5,000 tons. At the numerous stalls of this festival, you can buy strawberries directly from the producers, as well as many associated delicacies fruity strawberry punch, delicious strawberry milk, strawberry cakes and tarts in many variations await visitors in Oberkirch's pedestrian zone. The other “fruit of spring,” asparagus, will crash the party and also be featured in many delicious local dishes. In addition to regional market stands, wineries, and catering stands, numerous artisans from the region also offer their treasures for sale. The festival will be rounded out with plenty of entertainment on the stage, city tours, explanatory tours of the strawberry fields, as well as many attractions in the town’s streets and alleys. Also, don't miss the distillery demonstrations and brandy and liqueur tastings. With plenty of entertainment and activities for the children, it should be a great day trip for the whole family. The activities start on Saturday at 11:00 and end on Sunday evening 20:00; you can download a PDF of the weekend's activities from their website. Oberkirch is located about 90 minutes from Basel by car.
The event is free.
