On this evening, Jazz Festival Basel will be presenting a double concert entitled “The Art of Duo.”
The duo of pianist Johanna Summer and saxophonist Jakob Manz is a rare gem in the young German jazz scene: both are deeply rooted in the jazz idiom, yet expand it with their individual influences. For Summer, this is particularly true of classical music. With her free improvisations ranging from Bach to Ligeti, she performs regularly in major classical concert halls. Manz, in turn, captivatingly combines the melodic and rhythmic power of pop with the sensitivity of jazz—influenced by his deep admiration for pop-jazz pioneers like David Sanborn and Marcus Miller. Jazz, pop, classical, improvisation, composition— Summer and Manz distill all these elements on their second collaborative album, "Cameo," into the smallest possible format of musical interaction: the duo.
German pianist Michael Wollny and French soprano saxophonist Emile Parisien are kindred spirits. Both are undoubtedly considered style-defining representatives of their instruments in jazz and far beyond its boundaries. Both succeed in creating new and unexpected experiences from the most diverse musical influences, from jazz on both sides of the Atlantic, classical, pop, contemporary music, avant-garde, and mainstream. And both are masters of the moment, possessing the most sensitive understanding of how to engage with their counterpart and, in this exchange, allow ever-unheard music to emerge.
Tickets are CHF 46.30-88.90.
