Justina Lee Brown is much more than just a blues singer. The Swiss-based Nigerian and her band have dominated all blues challenges for years, but the blues is just one facet of her multi-layered music. African and Caribbean influences blend with gospel, soul, R'n'B, and earthy rock riffs to create an impressive repertoire that comes into its own in her charismatic live performances.
In her youth as a street kid in Lagos, Justina Ogunlolu faced the tough fight for survival and worked her way up to the big European stages with determination and ambition. In 2007, she was one of the hottest newcomers on the blues and soul scene in Nigeria. In the same year, she won the Nokia music competition and released her first hit single “Omo2sexy” shortly afterwards. In 2008, she was named the best female Nigerian singer of the year, which brought her further limelight and the “Women-in-Entertainment” Award 2009 (WIEA) in London as “Best African Female Voice.”
The collaboration with guitarist, composer and producer Nic Niedermann, a key figure in the Aargau and Swiss blues scene, was a turning point in her career. Niedermann became the bandleader and formed a top-class band for the charismatic singer. This enabled her to record her own songs, drawn from intense experiences, and present them in rousing stage performances. The band gave her a solid foundation and a new musical direction.
Brown is flying high. She impresses as a creative songwriter, expressive, and highly talented singer with a phenomenal voice and as an energetic performer. Her explosive performances, most recently at the Sierre Blues Festival and the Festival da Jazz in St. Moritz, will be remembered and have also attracted international interest. Her current album “Lost Child” takes up her own story and processes it in a touching way. Brown demonstrates an intimacy and transparency that few artists manage. The nine songs, dedicated to indestructible, tireless souls, ignite a fire within us that symbolizes hope and strength. “Lost Child” cements her status as the Swiss blues scene's biggest export hit and makes her nomination for the Swiss Blues Award 2024 seem only logical.
Tickets are CHF 30 in advance or CHF 35 at the door; CHF 5 discount for students.
