The Lithuanian sisters Onutė Gražinytė and Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla—a pianist and a conductor—both studied at the Čiurlionis School of Art in Vilnius. The Lithuanian Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis was a synesthete who achieved great fame not only as a composer, but also as a painter. The Sinfonieorchester Basel, under the direction of Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla, will play his work “Miške” (In the Forest) on this evening. Čiurlionis was close to Alexander Skrjabin, whose Concerto for Piano and Orchestra in F sharp minor also is on the program, with Onutė Gražinytė as the soloist. Raminta Šerkšnytė is another Lithuanian composer, whose works—including “Midsummer Song”—oscillate between ecstasy and tension and correspond perfectly with the palatable orchestral colors of Maurice Ravel's “Daphnis et Chloé,” which completes the program.
Tickets are CHF 35-105 for adults and half price for students.
