“The Art of Duo” — Giovanni Guidi & Andy Sheppard / Émile Parisien & Roberto Negro

Dorfkirche Riehen
Wednesday, 15 May
20:00

This is another exciting premiere for Basel! Pianist Giovanni Guidi (*1985) is one of the most exceptional musicians in Italian jazz in the last decades. He garnered a lot of attention on Enrico Rava’s albums “Tribe” and “On the Dance Floor.” Rava praised both Giudi’s “boundless curiosity” and the “relentless ingenuity” of his touch and his musical taste. The pianist constantly demonstrates that these qualities are not mutually exclusive. For the first time, Giudi comes to the Jazz Festival Basel with the fabulous London saxophonist Andy Sheppard.
French saxophonist Émile Parisien and Italian pianist Roberto Negro are approaching Ligeti’s String Quartet No. 1, “Métamorphoses nocturnes,” with both improvisation and great respect for the original. The two musicians have known each other for many years. “Eight or nine years ago, when we played together for the first time, Émile and I met in my kitchen to talk about music and to get to know each other better,” Negro recalls. They quickly found out that they both greatly admired Ligeti. Negro even shares some biographic parallels with the composer: While he was born in Turino, Negro grew up in Kinshasa (Congo), where Ligeti spent a lot of time studying African music that shaped his polyrhythmic esthetics. Additionally, Parisien and Negro shared their favorite piece by Ligeti—the String Quartet No. 1!
Tickets are CHF 37.20-70.80.
