“The Hendrix of Mali” — Vieux Farka Touré & Band

Volkshaus Basel
Monday, 22 April
20:15-22:15

"The desert blues goes West" was often the slogan associated with Vieux Farka Touré. It was only on his album "Les Racines," released in 2022, that he returned to the acoustic sound of his father. The musician Vieux Farka Touré steps out of the shadow of his legendary father Ali Farka Touré. He has a clear message for the Islamists in Mali. His desert blues is loved all over the world. When he is not on tour in North Africa or the United States, his sound is part of the acoustics of Bamako. His desert blues characterizes the nights of the West African metropolis. Even if you are not sitting in front of one of the open-air stages on the Niger, the wind carries the bluesy riffs to the neighboring districts and you can still dance to the hypnotically swaying rhythms of his band on the opposite bank. A ngoni lute scrapes provocatively. The electric guitar swirls blue notes around. And then there are those wonderfully melancholy vocals! It seems like an archaic prayer in the midst of the noisy, dirty Niger metropolis, this hustle and bustle of marketplaces and minibuses. Indeed, the sounds of the band go back centuries.
Tickets are CHF 58.60-89.90 for seats and CHF 40.20 for standing room.
