The ballet “The Nutcracker” is based on Alexandre Dumas’ version of the story by E.T.A. Hoffmann, “Nutcracker and Mouse King.” At the center is Marie. On Christmas Eve, she receives a nutcracker from her godfather Drosselmeyer. When she goes to sleep, she dreams of a battle between the toy soldiers led by the nutcracker and the army of the mouse king. With her help, the nutcracker prevails and changes into a prince. Together, they travel to the land of the Sugarplum Fairy, who organizes a grand party in their honor. The spectacular set by theater designer Vjatscheslav Okunev and the carefree lightness of the International Festival Ballet ensemble make this a dreamy and fairy tale-like version of this classic ballet, which hasn’t lost its fascination even after more than 100 years.
