Theater — The Metamorphoses of Maria Sibylla Merian

“... so that I can bring pleasure and joy to both connoisseurs of art and lovers of insects.” At age 13, Maria Sibylla Merian observed the development of a silkworm into a butterfly for the first time. From then on, the metamorphosis would never let her go. She collected, observed, and painted every stage of insect transformation with meticulous precision. She founded a painting school for women, separated from her husband, and raised her daughters alone. Merian was over 50 years old when she sailed to Suriname to study the local fauna and flora. She criticized the colonialists' slavery and their profit-seeking and lamented the disappearance of biodiversity on the sugar plantations. After the trip, she published a magnificent volume with 60 copper plates of illustrations that has lost none of its fascination to this day. The theme of metamorphosis not only shaped Merian’s life's work. She also repeatedly threw off the tight corset that her time imposed on women and reinvented herself. The play, text, and idea were conceived by Satu Blanc.
