Viola players are the favorite subject of musicians' jokes, but Roland Satterwhite (also a member of the Moka Efti Orchestra) shows that more can be expected from his guild than slowness and a simple disposition: he holds his instrument like a guitar and plucks sounds out of it that are sometimes reminiscent of the blues from the Mississippi Delta, sometimes of the West African griot music tradition.
Together with guitarist Tal Arditi and drummer Rafat Muhammad, Satterwhite has formed a trio with the poetic name Tolyqyn that will undoubtedly make the Lörrach audience sit up and take notice with its fascinating tonal language. The debut album of the three, released in 2020, caused a storm of enthusiasm and ensured appearances at the Tollwood Festival in Munich, at the Traumzeit Festival in Duisburg, and at the Copenhagen Jazz Fest, among others.
