UNESCO World Heritage Days — Abbey of St. Gallen

Every year, on the second weekend of June, the UNESCO World Heritage Sites will open their doors and invite you to discover their secrets, their uniqueness, and their extraordinary value. With the exception of 2020, when this event had to be cancelled, more than 30,000 visitors each year are enchanted by the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. In addition to the main event, which will take place in Bellinzona this year, local events will be held simultaneously at other UNESCO World Heritage Sites around Switzerland. Find out more about the program of the Swiss World Heritage Days at the individual World Heritage sites in Switzerland at their central website.
One of the participating regions is the Abbey District of St. Gallen, which together with its sublime cathedral forms a historic ensemble that is unmatched worldwide. The famous abbey library sports the most beautiful secular Rococo interior in Switzerland. Dubbed the “Pharmacy of the Soul,” it is home to 170,000 precious books as well as 2,000 priceless medieval manuscripts. The day’s events at the Convent of St. Gallen include two free special guided tours on medieval writing culture with an exclusive writing workshop at 14:00 and 15:30. The number of participants is limited; first-come-first-serve.
