Just as in 1525, many people today, 500 years later, feel that they are living in a time of great upheaval. The transition from the Middle Ages to the modern era around 1500 was a turning point in all areas of life. In Europe, the old, supposedly divine system of rule that had been unshakable for centuries gradually gave way to a new worldview focused on people and their rights. The Peasants' War, the largest popular uprising for freedom in German territories to date, and the non-violent Anabaptist movement are impressive examples of this. They are the results of a time of change, full of upheavals, downfalls, and new beginnings.
Today is also characterized by enormous changes in living conditions. Digitalization, globalization, individualization, and climate change are key words. Upheavals generate fears and collective experiences of crisis. Then as now, there were epidemics and pandemics, economic hardships, new media—then, the printing press; today, digital technology—with rumors, fake news, and conspiracy theories. At the same time, however, upheavals also open up new ways of thinking and acting and new opportunities for the future. With a focus on the Peasants' War on the Upper Rhine and the emerging Anabaptism in the three-countries region 500 years ago, this special exhibition aims to raise awareness of the peculiarities of times of upheaval.
