Trees are among the oldest living things on Earth. They connect heaven and earth, inspire stories and art. Beyond a human-centered perspective, trees are intelligent, sentient, and capable protagonists with their own stories. The relationship between trees and humans is existential. What significance Christmas trees, the tree of life, and the world tree have is shown by the exhibits and narratives from across the world featured in this year’s Christmas exhibition at the Museum der Kulturen Basel.
Christmas trees have lit up our homes during the advent season to celebrate the birth of Christ ever since the 16th century. To mark winter solstice on December 21, it was common in central Europe to go out into the forest and gather evergreen branches. They nurtured the hope that spring would return in the not-too-distant future. In this sense, little fir trees from Mexico and tree-like pyramids from the German Erzgebirge (Ore Mountains) open the exhibition. Based on the motif of the tree of life, the exhibition shows diverse encounters and relationships between people and trees.
On this evening, there will be a public opening of the exhibit; all are welcome; no registration required.
