VivaCello Festival VivaSound IV — Martinů

Stadtkirche Liestal
Sunday, 11 September

After a four-year break, the fabulous VivaCello Festival is back! This edition, which is called "Furiant," will take place once again in the old town of Liestal with a total of 13 concerts, including atmospheric morning concerts in the Mooi restaurant, after-work concerts in the Kulturscheune, and symphony and chamber concerts in the Stadtkirche that tell of the rich musical culture of Bohemia. The Bohemian dance "Furiant," which means "enthusiastic," sets the standard for the music and protagonists of this festival that is all about the cello.
This afternoon concert on the last day of the VivaCello Festival will celebrate the chamber music works for cello and piano by Czech composer Bohuslav Martinů. One can safely count Martinů among the eclectics. "Choosing the best of everything"—that pretty much applies to him. He was certainly selective: even if he was always open to all influences, in his mature work he managed to transform what he had collected into something recognizable as his own. The same is true for his works for cello and piano; they offer, so to speak, the panorama of Martinu's last 20 years of life, and they are all fundamentally different. His last work was created very close to Liestal, in Schönenberg. The “Variations on a Slovak Theme” are dedicated to his beloved homeland.
Tickets are CHF 40 for adults, CHF 20 for students until age 26, and CHF 5 for accompanying kids up to age 12.
