Since Samara Joy McLendon, who was born into a clan of gospel musicians in 1999, graduated from college in New York two years ago, her career has gone from one success to another. She has released three albums and won major awards. In addition to a Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Album, she also won—across genres—Best New Artist and Best Jazz Performance. When she gushingly tells the audience about her highs, Samara Joy giggles as if she doesn't fully understand what's happening to her. Then she sings a new song and shows that she enjoys being able to shine. Thanks to her vocal virtuosity and verve, she really doesn't need to shy away from comparisons. She phrases as loosely and confidently as Ella Fitzgerald; her rhythmic finesse is reminiscent of the elegance of Sarah Vaughan; and in the up-tempo pieces, she develops a furioso à la Betty Carter. The Samara Joy Quartet also impresses thanks to the outstanding soloists in the band, especially the great pianist. This “Vocal Gala Night” is a fantastic start to the 2024 Jazz Festival Basel!
