Winterreise Tour with Thomas Hampson
Long regarded as one of the most innovative musicians of our time, baritone Thomas Hampson has received numerous international awards for his unique artistry and cultural leadership. This performance of Schubert's “Winterreise” is a rare opportunity to hear the acclaimed opera star in the intimacy of one of the world's finest concert halls, the Musiksaal of the Stadtcasino Basel, where he will demonstrate his much admired sensitivity, nuance, and deep understanding of the German Lied. The “Winterreise,” which places great demands on the performers due to its scope and structural coherence, occupies a top position in the repertoire and is an experience for performers and audience alike.
The role of the piano is also of unparalleled importance in the history of the genre, as its rhythms always express the poet's moods and provide rich effects in the depiction of the images of nature. Pianist Alexandros Kapelis, who has just recorded the complete solo piano concertos of J.S. Bach with the Berlin Baroque Soloists of the Berlin Philharmonic, joins Hampson to tackle Schubert's masterpiece. Kapelis will also open the evening's program with Schubert's popular Impromptus op. 90 for solo piano.
