Workshop — Play with Power. Let Me Walk the Dog
Embark on a transformative journey through the thought-provoking art of Paula Rego in this immersive series of performative workshops exploring the themes of power and surrender in a playful way. Through a combination of embodiment, play, reflection, and experimental activities, participants will deepen their own understanding of the concepts, narratives and the complexities of power dynamics and their impact, emotions, and the human psyche.
This participatory, performative workshop explores the concept of play as represented in Paula Rego's artworks, particularly those involving dogs. It explores the complexity of play, including its symbolic meaning and power dynamics, through a combination of somatic exercises, performative displays, and group discussion. Participants will engage with the characters and archetypes in Rego's paintings by using their bodies to play and interpret the scenes and emotions depicted.
This English-language workshop will be held in the Paula Rego exhibition room by Sharka Rey, a psychosomatic sex educator and performance artist from Basel. She studied psychology at the University of West London and is currently focusing on sexual culture, “epistemological disobedience,” and power dynamics as part of her Masters in Social Sciences at the University of Basel. With a further background in yoga, dance, experimental voice work, theater improvisation, BDSM, tantra and tao, her main interest lies in exploring “realness” in encounters (on and off stage), including its boundaries and limitations.
Cost is CHF 5, plus admission to the museum. Minimum age is 16 years. The event will take place in the Kunstmuseum Basel | Neubau.
