Workshop — The Role of Art in Shaping Historical Narratives

Kunstmuseum Basel | Gegenwart
Sunday, 25 August
15:00-16:30

In conjunction with their current exhibition of figurative Black art, “When We See Us,” the Kunstmuseum Basel | Gegenwart is offering a series of workshops entitled “Dialogue Sessions” that makes the diverse perspectives of the Black and African diaspora in Switzerland visible. The workshops use artworks and themes from the exhibition to look beyond conventional notions of culture and identity.
On this afternoon, there will be an English-language workshop entitled “The Role of Art in Shaping Historical Narratives” with art and cultural researcher and curator Marilyn Umurungi. This session introduces an intersectional, Afro-feminist lens on BIPOC groups and movements that have become essential in creating visibility for communities of the diaspora. It explores how different community networks have come together to mobilize and advocate for marginalized groups across Switzerland.
