Yonathan Avishai (* 1977) grew up in Israel and Japan. He began taking piano lessons at a young age and soon discovered jazz. At age 14 he already founded his own bands. He later became a member of The Left Bank, a cooperative of musicians formed to promote original music in Tel Aviv. This led to his engagement with the social and local aspects of cultural development. For years he has been one of the most exciting voices in jazz.
Avishai is coming to Basel with his own trio for the first time. This trio with the Israeli bassist Yoni Zelnik, who lives in Paris, and Greek drummer Donald Kontomanou leaves plenty of room for the music with a "reduction to the essentials" (Jazzthetik). "Joys and Solitudes" is the name of the trio’s latest album. Avishai also plays a tango on it, playfully remembers a trip to the Congo, and shows an awareness of tradition and a spirit of discovery.
