Saxophonist and composer James Brandon Lewis has an inspiring energy. Over the last few years, he has emerged as one of the most exciting figures in jazz and improvised music. He is a musician who rejects stylistic hierarchies and someone who feverishly explores new ideas and takes on new stimuli with each new project. Inspired by molecular biology, Lewis is developing his own system for fantastic, beautiful music. His breathtaking debut album "Molecular" features four of the great musicians of contemporary American jazz—drummer Chad Taylor, pianist Aruán Ortiz, and bassist Brad Jones. "It's all notated," says the composer. "But I still feel the music is free, because it's the staves that determine the harmonic information." The James Brandon Lewis Quartet takes off with exuberant joy of playing and that rhythmic intensity and thematic beauty anchored in the jazz tradition.
The first part of the concert is a premiere at the offbeat festival. The singer Maria von Rütte has put together an a cappella formation with singers from the Jazzcampus Basel—a promising project with really great voices. The concert premiere will take place at 19.00h.
Tickets are CHF 40.20 for seats and CHF 25.90 for standing room.
