The Swiss artist Sandra Knecht (*1968 in Zürich, living and working in Buus/BL) has been exploring the concept of “Heimat” (home) in her artistic practice for nearly 10 years, examining it geographically, historically, sociologically, philosophically, and culinarily. “Heimat” must constantly be renegotiated. It is difficult to define, as it is as individual as it is transient, constantly changing in (one’s own) perception. The feeling of “home” can be tied to places, to people, but also to what we feel and eat, as well as to our thoughts and ideas. With “Home Is a Foreign Place,” the concept of “Heimat” is questioned as a construct.
