Increase in Thefts from Bicycle Baskets
The cantonal police in Basel-Stadt has recently recorded a notable increase in thefts from bicycle baskets in the canton—in many cases while the cyclists are riding their bikes! The thieves are particularly targeting handbags and backpacks placed in the baskets, grabbing them while they are passing the unsuspecting cyclists. In connection with this development, the Basel-Stadt cantonal police asks you to take the following precautions.
- Carry your bags and valuables on your body whenever possible. People frequently tie their bags to the seat post for supposed additional security. However, in the event of an attempted theft, this practice could lead to a fall and thus to an increased risk for cyclists.
- The police also recommend that you do not use headphones while riding your bike. This enables cyclists to be more aware of their surroundings and to notice potential thieves in good time.
Anyone who witnesses anything suspicious should not hesitate to report it immediately to the cantonal police by calling the emergency number 117. The faster suspicious activity is reported, the more effectively the police can act. Victims of theft are asked to report the matter to the nearest police station as soon as possible. Every report can help to identify the perpetrators and prevent further thefts.
